Donating Money to Public Institutions

Here is an idea that might to be of value to those of you who raise money for an organization that also receives government funding.

If you have been directly involved in doing this, then you have probably found that working with the government can be a chore. The government side of the contribution has so many strings attached that it slows down the whole process and can add needless cost into the program.

The United States Merchant Marine Academy has a magazine for its Alumni called the Kings Pointer. Charles Hill, the chairman the Alumni Foundation mentioned some excellent advice that he received from the West Point Association of Graduates (AOG).

The AOG avoided being bogged down by government regulations by taking over the planning and implementation of some building projects at their school. So instead of simply donating money to West Point, they planned the project and donated the buildings instead.

This seems like a great way to give money more efficiently. The AOG says that they saved up to 40% on their projects.
