A strange and interesting election is shaping up for Ted Kennedy’s Senatorial seat between Martha Coakley and Scott Brown. Coakley is the Massachusetts Attorney General and won the Democratic Primary by “Crushing three male opponents to clinch the Democratic nomination for the late Ted Kennedy’s U.S. Senate seat with 47% of the vote on December 8” and in a month old Time Magazine article, was expected to be the next Senator from Massachusetts.
However the respected Rasmussen Poll which just came out shows that the gap has narrowed to two points. The poll lists Coakley at 49% which is down 1% from a week ago and Brown at 47% and up 6% from a week ago. Both sides have been caught by surprise by the closeness of this race since; Massachusetts is a heavily Democratic State and because Brown has made his campaign explicitly about the chance Massachusetts voters have to block the health care bill.
Unfortunately for Democrats, any grim news here, combined with the Virginia and New Jersey election results will hurt their chances in both fundraising and recruiting for future elections. As a result, Democrats are upping the ante in this previously boring race by suddenly spending large amounts of money and running attack ads against Brown.
