Pelosi – Healthcare and Unintended Consequences

Nancy Pelosi was speaking at a meeting of Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders in Washington DC when she responded to a question about the benefits of the healthcare bill. She gave the following  foolish response;

“We see it as an entrepreneurial bill; a bill that says to someone, if you want to be creative and be a musician or whatever, you can leave your work, focus on your talent, your skill, your passion, your aspirations because you will have health care.”

Many conservatives and Republicans rightly blasting her statement as encouraging the nonproductive people to live off the fruits of those who work and pay taxes. There will certainly be fewer incentives to work because not having health care is a strong motivator to find work.

I’m sure you can imagine some 30 year old boy who lives off of his parents with dreams of becoming a rock star, an artist or an actor and who now has one less incentive to become a taxpayer. This man-child can now postpone his real-world career in order to indulge in his fantasies.

However, this healthcare bill will have one very positive benefit; it will encourage entrepreneurship. It pains me to say this because I am against the health care bill that was recently passed; but when the healthcare changes are in effect, a potential entrepreneur can quit his or har job more easily in order to take on the risk of creating a new business. Possibly, the health care reform bill will result in an increase in the number of new small businesses in America.

So Pelosi wasn’t completely wrong (again, it pains me to say this) she just made her point in a ham-fisted way.

    Dear Backbench Media:

    What do you think about the recent Virginia Judge finding that a portion of the obamacare bill was unconstitutional? Ultimately the dispute came down to the individual’s right to participate. Although I am not sure how the ‘unconstitutional’ section will effect the rest of the bill (it is my understanding that the bill was written in a way that one portion would not completely destroy the entire document)….or if the Virginia court even has the proper ability to make such a decision (given the fact that this piece of the bill has yet to take effect).

    Perhaps this is what happens if you agree with Ms. Nancy!
